- Choose a pot with drainage holes.
- Place some broken pot shards in the base and fill it to within about 4" of the rim with soil or compost, then plant the daffodils with the pointed tips upwards.
- Cover with soil and water thoroughly. In colder zones, move the pots to a frost-free location such as a garage for the winter or wrap them in bubble wrap for protection.
Planting Daffodils in Pots For a Succession of Blooms
There is a vast range of daffodils to choose from. By planting early, midseason and later flowering varieties, you can enjoy daffodils and narcissi in bloom from February through May. For a long-lasting display, try the lasagna method. Plant a deep pot with a lower layer of late-blooming bulbs such as Salome and an upper layer of midseason daffodils such as Apricot Whirl. Finish off with a layer of crocuses for blooms in very early spring.

Remove faded blooms and allow the foliage to shrivel right back before digging up the bulbs and removing any diseased or damaged ones. Let them dry before storing in paper sacks in a cool dark place. Replant the bulbs in the fall.
