Enjoy Weeks of Color in Spring By Planting Different Types of Tulips

Tulips are one of the most popular fall-planted flower bulbs and come in a dazzling array of colors, shapes, and sizes. One of the questions we're most often asked is “How long do tulips last?”. Individual tulips are not renowned for their longevity but with careful planning, you can have tulips blooming in your garden for several weeks.

How Long Do Tulips Last in the Ground?

Tulip bulbs are classified as early and mid-season tulips. Bloom times will depend on your location and the weather but, as a rule, early tulips will bloom from March to April and mid-season types will extend the blooming period later into spring. If the weather is cool, tulips may last 1-2 weeks. Tulip bulbs left in the ground may not bloom the following season so it's best to dig them up and store them before replanting between September to December.

How Long Do Tulips Last When Stored?

For the best results, plant your tulip bulbs as soon as possible after purchasing them in the fall. If conditions don't allow you to plant your tulips immediately, store the bulbs in a cool, dark and dry place or consider planting them in a pot. To enjoy another season of blooms, wait until the foliage has died back, dig the bulbs up and store them in a net or on a tray till you can replant them in the fall.

How Long Do Tulips Last in a Bouquet?

Tulips look fabulous in a vase, either on their own or combined with other spring flowers. Cut them as the color just starts to show; they will continue to open fully and should last for around 5 days. Keep the vase topped up with cold water. Cut tulips will last longer in a cool room and out of direct sunlight. Tulips are a highlight of springtime, whether in the garden or in a vase. By choosing your tulip bulbs according to their blooming period, you can create a colorful spring display that lasts for several weeks.
