How to Grow Amaryllis Indoors

Plant amaryllis bulbs between October and April. For a single bulb, use an 8" pot that is about an inch deeper than the bulb. The top half of the bulb should be just above the surface of the soil. Water thoroughly and place in a sunny, cool place. As the shoot appears, increase watering and once the blooms open, move out of direct sunlight to prolong their life.

How to Grow Amaryllis Bulbs Outdoors

If you live in an area with a warm climate, you may be wondering how to grow amaryllis bulbs outside. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil that should be enriched with compost or manure. Plant in groups with the tops of the bulbs exposed. In zone 8, mulch in the winter to protect from any frosts and they will reward you with a colorful display in spring. The bulbs can be left in the ground for many seasons.

How to Grow Amaryllis: Aftercare

After the blooms have faded, cut off the stems. Large leaves will now grow; feed monthly with a pot plant fertilizer to help next year’s bloom to develop. Place outside in a sheltered position after the risk of frost. In fall, stop watering and place in a cool dark location such as a garage for 6 weeks. Then remove the old leaves and repot the bulb in fresh soil; your amaryllis should bloom again in 6 - 10 weeks.
