How To Grow and Care for Oxalis

Oxalis, also known as Wood Sorrel or Shamrock, is a beautiful plant with delicate, clover-like leaves and vibrant flowers. It thrives both indoors and outdoors, making it a versatile choice for gardeners. Follow these steps to successfully plant and care for Oxalis.

Planting Oxalis Bulbs

  1. When to Plant Outdoors: Plant in spring after the last frost in cooler climates (USDA Zones 6-9). In warmer zones (10+), oxalis can be planted year-round. Indoors: Oxalis can be grown anytime as a houseplant.
  2. Choosing a Location Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade (about 4-6 hours of sunlight per day). Soil: Well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). If growing in pots, use a light, well-draining potting mix.
  3. Planting Depth & Spacing Bulbs/Tubers: Plant 1-2 inches deep with the pointed side facing up. Spacing: Space bulbs 3-4 inches apart to allow room for growth.
  4. Watering After Planting Water lightly after planting to moisten the soil but avoid waterlogging. Keep soil slightly damp but not soggy while waiting for sprouting, which usually takes 2-4 weeks.

Caring for Oxalis

  1. Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again. Indoor oxalis in pots requires less frequent watering than outdoor plants.
  2. Sunlight & Temperature: Oxalis thrives in full sun to partial shade. Ideal temperatures: 60-75°F. Protect from extreme heat by providing afternoon shade.
  3. Fertilizing Feed: monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10 or similar) during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can cause leggy growth.
  4. Pruning & Maintenance: Remove faded flowers and yellowing leaves to promote new growth. If the plant becomes leggy, trim back foliage to encourage bushier growth. Oxalis goes dormant occasionally (especially in hot summers or cold winters). Reduce watering during dormancy, and resume once new growth appears.
  5. Overwintering (For Colder Climates): In zones 6 and below, dig up bulbs before the first frost and store them in a dry, cool place for replanting in spring. If grown in pots, bring them indoors and place them in a bright, sunny spot.

Oxalis is easy to grow and adds a cheerful pop of color to gardens, containers, and indoor spaces. With proper care, these charming plants will reward you with vibrant foliage and delicate flowers year after year.
